Around four million cubic metres of nuclear waste has been "discovered" by a government advisory body.

The Radioactive Waste Management Advisory Committee said the low-grade nuclear waste did not appear in government inventories and there is nowhere for it to be disposed of.

Jane Beasley, Communications Manager for the CIWM, told ePolitix.com: "Whilst the waste is low grade, there needs to be urgent implementation of an effective management strategy to ensure appropriate treatment and disposal, taking environmental impacts into consideration.

"In addition a thorough investigation and audit of potential sources of the waste material should be a priority to avoid subsequent 'discoveries', identifying the scale of the problem, and ensuring development of sufficient treatment and disposal capacity.

"The management of the waste material should be to the highest possible standards, adopting best practice from overseas".
