Transport secretary Alistair Darling has backed plans to overhaul the system of rail franchises.

The new policy, announced by the Strategic Rail Authority, sees the creation of some new franchises and a big reduction in the amount of time transport giant Stagecoach can operate its South West Trains routes.

George Muir, director general of the Association of Train Operating Companies, said: "The plan offers greater clarity and stability. It focuses on meeting passenger needs. This is what we want to do. Let's get on with it.

"We welcome the SRA's establishment of a methodical programme of franchising, based on clear principles set out in this policy document, with decisions following in a predictable way. This will help remove the uncertainty which has been hanging over the industry and aid delivery of passenger benefits and value for money.

"We are ready to work with the SRA to help with the practical details of putting the plan into practice to make sure it will work."
