The Strategic Rail Authority yesterday unveiled a major reform of the rail timetable in order to increase capacity and ease delays.

The proposed changes include banning slow trains from intercity lines and adding further carriages to rush hour trains.

George Muir, director general of ATOC, told ePolitix.com: "This is good news for passengers and freight customers as it will eventually allow for more trains and improved service. The railways have experienced tremendous growth over the past five years with a record number of trains now carrying the highest number of passengers for over 50 years, and freight moved has grown by more than 50 per cent since the mid-nineties.

"However, this success has now reached the stage that to get the best out of the network and to facilitate further growth requires a thorough review of issues such as how the timetable is planned, infrastructure enhancements and passenger service requirements.

"The passenger and freight operators are fully supportive of this consultation process."
