Energy minister, Brian Wilson has announced a UK wide joint scheme to develop renewable energy technology.

The Bioenergy Capital Grants Scheme will be funded by the DTI and the New Opportunities Fund, and will have a total budget of £66 million.

Stephen Dunmore, chief executive of the New Opportunities Fund, told ePolitix.com: "This lottery money from the New Opportunities Fund will make a significant contribution to the development of an innovative renewable energy industry. Surveys have shown that people put environmental issues high on their agenda of lottery spending.

"Global warming will put at risk the quality of life of all of us, and start-up funds for the development of efficient and sustainable renewable energy is a surefire contribution to the nation's benefit."
