Lattice and the National Grid have announced they are to merge.

The fusion will bring together the two major power transmission companies in gas and electricity and is expected to get the final go-ahead later this autumn.

Mike Jeram, national secretary for energy, told ePolitix.com: "Unison will want assurances about further job losses which may arise from this merger. Earlier this year National Grid cut its staff by 350 and Transco is currently shedding over 3000 jobs. We will strongly oppose compulsory redundancies and any threat to the safe operation of these companies."
