Forum Brief: Cancer research
Downing Street has issued a warning to NHS trusts in response to findings that more money needs to be spent on cancer treatment.
The report, published by the Science and Technology Committee on Wednesday, concludes that detailed research expenditure figures should be released to reassure MPs that the £190 million allocated by the government is spent on cancer research alone.
"If there are lessons to be learnt, they will be learnt," warned Number 10. "It is obviously a matter for authorities to decide what their priorities are but equally when the money was allotted it was made clear that the money was being given to improve cancer treatment."
Forum Response: Cancer Research UK
A spokesman for Cancer Research UK told ePolitix.com: "The experience of doctors and nurses in Cancer Research UK-funded units is that initial funds for cancer services are not benefiting patients yet, but this is because trusts are hard pressed. We are calling on the government to ensure that trusts are well funded to allow the money through."
