Forum Brief: Adult skills initiative

Plans to overhaul adult learning and end the low levels of reading and numeracy among workers have been announced by the government.

Tony Blair and education and skills secretary Estelle Morris launched "Get On", the next phase in the government's drive to reduce the number of adults who cannot read, write or add up properly. The campaign is part of the government's £1.5 billion "skills for life" strategy.

Forum Response: Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development

Mike Cannell, adviser on training and development at the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development, told ePolitix.com: "Where does most of the effort and expenditure go on training? Anyone who has spent any time in the training business will tell you that the answer is management training.

"Mostly, this is justified: the well-being of organisations depends on properly informed managers making the right decisions. But this emphasis may mean that the needs of other parts of the workforce are overlooked. Organisations that do not train should take note. Training works - and for all categories of employee."
