The chief executive of BP, Lord Browne, has received a 58 per cent pay rise, taking his salary to more than £3 million per annum.

In response, Bill Morris, general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union, said: "Some fat cats are bigger than others, but this one is clearly the biggest. He has certainly set the pace for BP and other oil company workers. He was probably too busy to notice, but petrol prices went up yesterday for ordinary, hard-working motorists."

A spokesperson for BP told ePolitix.com: "Lord Browne has transformed BP from a solid second division company into the second largest oil company in the world. The board believes that as such, he should receive a pay deal comparable to other chief executives of major global companies."
