Forum Brief: Tube strike

Tube drivers have voted for industrial action in a dispute over pay.

The two main rail unions, Aslef and the RMT, have agreed to join forces in order to maximise disruption. The unions have accused London Underground of backtracking on a deal to close the £!600 gap in pay between the drivers of passengers and engineering trains.

Forum Response: London Underground

Mike Brown, customer services director of London Underground, told ePolitix.com: "Given that over half their effected members have chosen not to vote for industrial action, this result is far from an overwhelming strike mandate from the RMT.

"Discussions continue with both RMT and Aslef and we remain committed to finding a resolution to this and the issue of driver pay which is acceptable to London Underground, our drivers and the unions.

"We hope that the trades unions will see these discussions through to a proper conclusion"

Forum Response: Transport for London

A spokesperson for Transport for London told ePolitix.com: "This is no way to settle pay disputes. At the end of the day the commuters are the ones to suffer and we urge those involved in the action to negotiate rather than strike."
