Children as young as 12 could be tagged as part of plans to fight soaring levels of youth crime.

Home secretary David Blunkett has out plans to introduce electronic tagging of juveniles on bail.

Blunkett also detailed plans for a London Youth Crime Task Force to target "hard core" juvenile offenders involved in violent crime and street robberies.

A spokesperson for the Children's Society told ePolitix.com: "While we welcome anything that can prevent young people offending, we have to be very careful about electronic tagging as it means a restriction of liberty. Our practice in bail support has shown that the way to prevent re-offending in young people is to make sure they have the service and support they need rather than relying on tagging."
