Met chief refuses to quit over shooting
Sir Ian Blair

Sir Ian Blair is facing pressure to resign after the Metropolitan Police was found guilty over the fatal shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes.

An Old Bailey jury decided the police force had broken health and safety laws and unnecessarily put the public at risk in the hours before de Menezes' death.

Met commissioner Sir Ian expressed his "deep regret" and insisted the shooting was a one-off tragedy.

And he said he would "continue to lead the Met in its increasingly successful efforts to reduce crime and to deter and disrupt terrorist activities in London and elsewhere in the United Kingdom".

Prime minister Gordon Brown and home secretary Jacqui Smith both expressed their "full confidence" in the commissioner.

However, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have called for him to resign, with shadow home secretary David Davis describing his position as "untenable".

Lib Dem home affairs spokesman Nick Clegg called for Sir Ian to "take responsibility on behalf of his whole organisation and resign".

ePolitix.com: Shaping the political agenda

As the UK's premier politics website, we aim to improve communication between parliamentarians, constituents and organisations.

We do this in an impartial manner, publishing balanced reports and providing information without taking sides in the political debate.

Working closely with parliamentarians across the political spectrum, we offer a range of opportunities for MPs and peers to explain their work.

And we help the public and other organisations to engage in the political debate and shape the way that policies develop.
