Foreign criminals boosting prison population, says Clarke
Britain's prison population crisis is being fuelled by a large increase in foreign criminals, Charles Clarke said yesterday.
The home secretary told MPs on the home affairs committee that overseas nationals now made up about one in eight inmates - almost 10,000 out of a record 78,000.
Clarke did not tell MPs what he proposed to do about it.
