PM shakes-up Downing Street staff

Tony Blair is shaking up his back room team in Number 10 in a bid to adopt a more consensual style of government.

Large-scale structural reforms are not expected, with the Cabinet Office keeping its co-ordinating role.

However the prime minister is expected to tighten his grip on public services policy by bringing in leading proponents of 'choice' such as Philip Collins from the Social Market Foundation.

With key adviser Baroness Morgan stepping down, Labour national executive member Ruth Turner is set to take on relations with the party, while press officer Jo Gibbons will be responsible for scheduling.

John McTernan replaces new MP Pat McFadden as Blair's political secretary.
