Working hours opt-out in spotlight

Tony Blair has been accused of failing to defend Britain's opt-out from European rules restricting the hours staff can work.

The prime minister had "connived" with Labour members of the European parliament who had voted against the opt-out, Stephen O'Brien, the Conservative industry spokesman said on Monday.

The government has opposed any restrictions to the opt-out, but some Labour MEPs have voted alongside socialist MEPs from other states to abolish the exemption.
