Ministers are planning to build more than double the number of homes needed to cause a significant fall in house price inflation, according to research commissioned by a think tank close to Labour.

In a report out today that criticises much of the government's housing agenda, the Institute for Public Policy Research concludes that an increase in housing supply in the South East is not the way to make homes more affordable.
