Brown firm on euro tests

Gordon Brown yesterday indicated there would be no softening of the government's five tests on euro membership.

The chancellor said that there would have to be "clear and unambiguous proof" that it would be in the UK's interests to join.

Speaking at an earlier press conference, the chancellor also said Lady Thatcher would be "appalled" by the latest Conservative tax and spending plans.
