Blair pledges to boost police force
Tony Blair promised yesterday to put a "visible uniformed presence" on the streets to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.
The prime minister, who was quizzed by voters in a live Sky television programme, acknowledged that statistics suggesting overall crime had fallen were no consolation to those who live in high crime areas.
Anti-social behaviour orders were essential because "a stick as well as a carrot" was needed, he said.
"You do need to be able to take action against people who are making life hell."
