Bank of England governor 'nearly resigned'

The former governor of the Bank of England, Sir Eddie George, nearly resigned after a disagreement with Gordon Brown, documents released under the Freedom of Information Act have revealed.

The letters, which show how the chancellor sprang the decision to strip the Bank of its responsibility for banking supervision, were released by the Treasury.
