David Willetts has urged the Inland Revenue to stop trying to reclaim overpaid child tax credits.

The Conservative work and pensions spokesman said hundreds of thousands of families are now "in great financial distress" as the revenue tries to reclaim overpayments.

"The system will never get into clear water if it is endlessly bogged down in disputes about overpayments that are causing a lot of real financial distress," he added.
