The Times reports Home Office documents showing that the real cost of identity cards, the bill for which is set to be published today, will be much higher than that claimed by ministers.

The papers show critics are closer to the true figure when estimating a cost to the taxpayer of £10 billion, than government estimates of around £3 billion.
