A tougher line must be taken against offenders who defy court orders, the lord chancellor indicated yesterday.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Magistrates' Association, Lord Falconer argued that if defendants fail to surrender to bail or turn up to court, they must be picked up on the same day and punished.
