Whitehall continues building programme

The government is continuing a massive building programme, despite pledging to cut civil servant numbers and move 20,000 staff out of the Capital.

Since the Lyons report in March on civil service reorganisation, the government has completed 783,000 sq ft of offices and is still building 970,000 sq ft, all of which it plans to occupy, according to figures from Drivers Jonas, the property consultants.

"Sir Humphrey is still alive and kicking, he has not moved on," said one adviser to the government.

"I think they are hoping Gordon Brown and Tony Blair will be gone in a couple of years and the whole thing will be kicked into the long grass."
