Ministers 'back away from smoking ban in pubs'

A lack of public support has prompted ministers to rethink plans to give local councils the power to ban smoking in work places including pubs and bars.

While health secretary John Reid has said the status quo is not an option, next month's public health white paper will instead allow for targeted restrictions on smoking in public places, says the FT.
