Jowell moves to save country house

Tessa Jowell has opted to save Apethorpe Hall in Northamptonshire, Britain's most neglected Grade I-listed country house.

The government is to invoke compulsory purchase powers to buy the hall. It will then be passed to English Heritage to carry out repairs.

The purchase and restoration are expected to cost about £12 million.
