New call for smoking ban
The government's chief medical officer has repeated his demand for a ban on smoking in enclosed public places.
Speaking as he unveiled his annual report, Sir Liam Donaldson revealed that he has failed to persuade health secretary John Reid to accept the proposal.
"I have talked to him a lot about this," Sir Liam said.
"There are not many things I disagree with him on, but I do disagree with him on his reluctance on this issue. But he has said his mind is open and I continue to have discussions with him and I hope we will get a breakthrough."
