Police chiefs facing sack over poor performance

Eight chief constables may be sacked for failing to cut crime and win public confidence in the police.

Under new Home Office assessment powers, forces that are continually graded "poor" may have their most senior officer replaced.

Inspectors have rated Avon and Somerset, Cambridgeshire, Cleveland, Greater Manchester, Humberside, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and West Yorkshire poorly.
