Top Conservative MEP Roger Helmer has called for his party to commit itself to withdrawal from the European Union.

In an article for the Guardian website, he warned that "it is not enough merely to reject the euro and the constitution and repatriate the common fisheries policy".

Meanwhile, Michael Howard has defended his European policies.

"If you stand up for what you believe in, you can get things done," he said yesterday.

The Independent says the Tories are in "disarray" over Europe.
