Cost of stress reaches £2bn

The cost of paying benefits to those suffering stress, depression and anxiety has reached £2 billion per year.

The new figures were revealed in a written parliamentary answer from disabilities minister Maria Eagle to shadow work and pensions spokesman Paul Goodman.

"These figures are shocking," he said.

"They prove that claims for depression, stress and anxiety are out of control and the government doesn't have a clue how to respond."
