Britain 'may cede criminal justice veto' to EU
The Telegraph reports that the government is about to breach one of its "red lines" in Europe.
Foreign secretary Jack Straw announced yesterday that Britain would accept majority voting on criminal justice matters if there was an "emergency brake" to protect national interests.
The paper interprets this as a major climbdown from the government's original position on the EU constitution.
It suggests Europe will now be able to interfere with Britain's common law of habeas corpus and trial by jury.
However the foreign secretary's pledge to the CBI's annual dinner last night that he will not accept any watering down of Britain's industrial relations laws has been welcomed by business leaders.
