Blunkett moves to amend terror laws

David Blunkett last night brought forward proposals to amend his powers to detain terrorism suspects without trial.

Under the changes, those suspects granted bail would be electronically tagged, while the home secretary would be able to challenge a court decision to grant bail to someone he has already certified as a terrorism suspect.

The move comes ahead of a hearing today at which he will again attempt to stop the release of a terror suspect held at Belmarsh prison since 2001.

The Special Immigration Appeals Commission has recommended that a man known as "G", a 35-year-old Algerian, should be released on health grounds.
