Judge admits criminal justice has failed

Britain's most senior judge has said the public has been let down by the criminal justice system for too long.

The lord chief justice Lord Woolf said in a speech last night that people's confidence in the courts was low.

"Unfortunately, it has to be accepted that, for many years, the public have had little confidence in the ability of our criminal justice system to ensure that justice is done," he said.
