Blunkett faces double rebellion over asylum

Home secretary David Blunkett faced a double rebellion last night, as MPs debated his plans for asylum reform.

A measure contained in the bill to restrict the right to appeal against asylum decisions was voted against by 35 Labour backbenchers, while 28 voted against proposals to remove benefits from failed asylum seekers.

Liberal Democrats also voted against both measures, while Conservative opposition was restricted to the aspect of appeals.

Nevertheless, the bill will move to the Lords, where it is expected to face stiffer opposition from peers.
