Council tax is set to increase by at least six per cent in England this year, according to figures compiled by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy.

The research, published today, suggests that the largest increases will be in the South West, where the biggest pensioner protests have been held.

The average increase across all household bands is predicted to be 6.6 per cent, while the average for Band D is six per cent.
