Labour MP for Leeds East and member of the Treasury select committee George Mudie yesterday branded the Penrose report on the near collapse of Equitable Life “the most expensive history book ever written”.

Appearing before the committee to discuss the findings of the report, financial secretary to the Treasury Ruth Kelly admitted that the 800-pages had cost the taxpayer £2.5 million.
