Tanzania rejects asylum camp idea
The Tanzanian government has said it has rejected a deal to take failed Somali asylum claimants expelled from the UK.
Tony Blair revealed the idea in the Commons yesterday, saying it was sensible that where people were beginning to make an “asylum journey” for some claims to be considered near their country of origin.
“We are in negotiations with the Tanzanian government as to how we can process claims for asylum nearer to the country of origin," he told MPs.
South Africa has now emerged as the second country the Home Office is holding talks with.
A report by the constitutional affairs committee leaked to the Guardian is set to attack plans to overhaul the immigration and asylum system as "wrong in principle".
