Labour bids to snap up Portillo
Tony Blair wants to make Michael Portillo a leading member of New Labour, according to a report in the Mirror.
The PM is said to have asked deputy Commons leader Phil Woolas to recruit the former Tory leadership contender.
A senior government source revealed: "A real love affair has developed between the PM and Michael Portillo.
"There is incredible mutual respect there and Tony believes Portillo is a major talent who still has a lot to offer. It's still not clear how all this will work.
"It's possible Portillo will be offered a Labour peerage and then given a top job. It could be the Lottery or the BBC."
