Universities ask for an extra £9bn

Universities have asked ministers for a 30 per cent increase in funding to repair buildings and recruit more staff, despite the proposed imposition of top-up fees.

Ivor Crewe, president of Universities UK, said that the funding rise was needed to correct 20 years of underfunding.

Higher education minister Alan Johnson said that the bid showed the need for variable fees.
