The latest register of MPs’ interests has revealed that former Cabinet ministers and senior Tories are prospering financially.

Robin Cook, the former foreign secretary, made up to £500,000 from the book telling his inside story on the build-up to the Iraq war.

Former Tory leader William Hague has made up to £175,000 for speeches, articles, television appearances and seminars, including up to £90,000 for his contract with the News of the World.

Michael Portillo, who twice failed to become Conservative leader, earned at least £250,000 from speaking and media engagements which cover three pages of the register.

Trade secretary Patricia Hewitt registered hospitality including tickets to the FA Cup final and British Grand Prix.
