No 10 rejects food tax plan
Downing Street and the Treasury have rejected a proposal by Tony Blair's policy advisers for a tax on junk foods to tackle the obesity epidemic.
The prime minister's strategy unit wanted to vary the rate of VAT depending on nutritional content but the Treasury denied any knowledge of the scheme.
"This is news to us. It sounds like the speculative musings of Cabinet Office pointy heads," a government source told the Telegraph.
