Five hundred hospital consultants have called on the government to introduce a system of compulsory insurance to support the NHS.

The doctors claim that insurance-based systems liberate doctors and patients, encourage innovation and are fairer.

The new group, Doctors for Reform, launches itself with a full-page advertisement in the Times.
