MPs concerned at Blair adviser's prison role

The Commons Northern Ireland select committee is set to increase the pressure on Number 10 to make special adviser Jonathan Powell more accountable to parliament.

The MPs are interested in examining his role in a decision to separate loyalist and republican paramilitaries in Maghaberry prison.

One source tells the Guardian about suspicions that Powell overruled secretary of state Paul Murphy to order the move.
