IRA distances itself from attack
In a bid to salvage Sinn Fein's seat at Northern Ireland devolution talks, the provisional IRA has distanced itself slightly from the attempted abduction of a dissident Republican last week.
With unionists threatening to bring an end to the talks, the paramilitary group said it did not "authorise" the attack.
The IRA may also be let off the hook by the failure of the victim to press charges.
