Peers slam plans for new speaker
Peers have criticised plans to elect a Lords speaker to preside over debates from the woolsack. Although the new post was proposed by a cross-party committee, it is opposed by the leaders of Conservative, Liberal Democrat and cross-bench peers who fear that the Lords' system of self-regulation is under threat.
