British travellers will have to apply in person for a visa to enter the United States from this year.

Under new security rules imposed by Congress, all visitors to the US with passports issued after October 26 must carry the new "biometric" type which will also require entry visas.

British officials have warned that these cannot be produced until the middle of next year at the earliest.
