Brown prepares for life without Balls

The chancellor's chief economic adviser, Ed Balls, is expected to leave the Treasury by the middle of this year, the FT reports.

To compensate for the expected loss, the department is boosting the number of senior advisers to Gordon Brown.

Balls is expected to seek selection as a Labour parliamentary candidate.
