Truancy rise prompts Tory attack
There has been a 40 per cent rise in the number of pupils missing at least half a day a year due to truancy since 1997, the Conservatives have claimed.
The increase came despite repeated government initiatives to tackle the problem, but ministers denied the figures were accurate.
