NHS PFI spending to be scrutinised

The Department of Health is to set up a new commercial directorate to oversee the £11 billion per year spent by the NHS on procurement for PFI hospitals.

The move is thought to reflect the shift in emphasis of the NHS as it moves from providing services to simply funding them and ensuring quality.
