Critics concern at identity numbers

Civil liberties campaigners have expressed concern over Treasury plans unveiled yesterday for personal identity numbers.

Ministers want to replace NHS and National Insurance numbers with a single code for identifying and holding information on all members of the public.

Campaign group Liberty said there was confusion as to how the number would interact with the Home Office's own identity cards initiative as well as presenting its own threats to freedoms.
