Europe minister Denis MacShane has mounted an outspoken attack on Romano Prodi, the president of the European commission.

In an interview with the Guardian MacShane said it was "not acceptable" that Prodi has allowed himself to become the de facto exiled leader of the Italian opposition.

He said Prodi should focus "100 per cent" on his commission role or opt instead to return to Italian politics.
