The head of Britain's new media regulator has claimed it is ready for a tough job.

Lord Currie, the chairman of Ofcom which tomorrow replaces five media and communications watchdogs, was upbeat.

"I was told it would be an impossible job. I disagree. Ofcom is an organisation with huge capability and we're ready to go," he said.
